“I used to think missionaries and evangelists are crazy and they are shameful jobs. I doubted the power of transformation God did in my Christian friends who did DTSes. I lived most of my Christian life out of tradition and came to my DTS just for adventure. During the lecture phase, I became uneasy over the excitement that were around me, that led me to question myself what I was doing there and who God was in my life. However, on hindsight reading through my journal, I saw how the “I-don’t-hear-God’s-voice” answers turn into “maybe-God-is-saying-this” answers. Outreach phase came too quickly and I was not ready to go out and tell people about the God that I was still so unsure of, but God was patient with me and blessed me with a great team who spurred my growth throughout all of my outreach. I grew leaps and bounds in my faith during outreach until I eventually decided to get baptised and dedicate my life to the cause of Christ. I have forsaken the past life and am on fire for Jesus! DTS was the best six months of my life. ‘God is faithful.’ It is cliché but this is my reality of God because God kept pursuing me even though I was not looking for Him.”

“Elie is not my real name. I chose it because ‘Elie’ means Light. I grew up in a Buddhist family, but God was introducing Himself to me through many of my friends. I was invited to church and experienced the love of God through the body of believers, especially at the time where I was drowning in my struggles of life. My parents became angry at me for going to church, eventually wanting to be baptised and following a ‘western religion.’ My church was not too encouraging about the idea of missions so I had no exposure to it. After being an English school teacher in Japan and an air stewardess in Singapore Airlines for two years each, I was invited into the world of YWAM and ended up serving another two years in the DTS department of YWAM Singapore. I came to YWAM Muizenberg for my SBS because I wanted to have a cross-cultural experience and God’s heart for pioneering ministries. My parents did not approve of my life in YWAM or coming to South Africa and I didn’t have the finances to come. However, God came through and provided the means all within one week and, upon seeing that, my parents were assured to let me come. Against all the odds in my life, God was constantly faithful and loving. I guess my name has a prophetic significance; that I can be a light to my family, my church and my friends, that they may see a glimpse of the goodness of God through my life and be drawn towards it.”

“Who am I? It was the question I kept asking myself. For the most of my Christian life, I lived a double life of partying and serving God. It was enjoyable at the start, but the tension frustrated me increasingly every day. It led to an unhealthy lifestyle of alcohol and drugs, and it almost destroyed my relationship with Acacia. My dream wanting to be a famous artiste was tearing our four-year relationship apart as she wanted to follow God’s dream. The problem was not with the drugs, alcohol, partying or dreams of being famous, but me allowing them to take control of my life.  I remember I woke up one morning, with my engagement on the verge of destruction, I cried out to Jesus, declaring that I give Him all control of my life. However, God did not want me to discard my dream. After we got married, He redirected it when we came to do a Sound of the Nations DTS 2016 and staffing a DTS now in YWAM Muizenberg. I share the heart of Sound of the Nations in using music as a platform to draw out the sound God has given every culture and ethnic group. Even though I fail every day, God uses YWAM and Acacia to transform me into the man that God wants me to be. The natural tendency whenever I fail is to condemn myself, but one reality that has stayed true throughout my whole life is that my walk with God is not dependent on how faithless I am, but on how faithful God is.”

“’You will become homeless if you leave the church’, was what they told me the last time I went there. I became a Christian four years ago but God was doing more work through me than in me for the first two. I experienced healings, miracles, salvations and spiritual encounters through my life but I was not radically transformed by God. I accepted Christ when I hit spiritual rock bottom and constantly pursued after ways to ‘buy miracles’ from God, hoping that He would bring peace in my heart because I kept giving to Him and the church. However, I did not realise that my church was imprisoning me with the idea that my relationship with God was one that I had to keep giving into in order to receive. Four separate times, God used random people to speak Galatians 5 to me, and I realised that I needed to be free from that distorted worldview of God. My healthy spiritual life started when I frequented another church where I progressively fell in love with Jesus as He started abundantly pouring out peace into my heart. Besides sustaining my walk with Him, God provided and is still providing for me financially when I did my DTS in YWAM Kona, and eventually coming to YWAM Muizenberg for my SBS. My desire to study the Word of God developed during my outreach here in South Africa when I saw YWAMers around me being so passionate about the Bible. Now that I am here, I find that there is no greater privilege than to study God’s word and nothing more powerful than wanting to know Him more. Three realities that my transformation consisted of, during these four years in my journey with God, were intimacy with my relationship with Jesus, gratitude for the blessings He sends and obedience to His calling regardless of any circumstance.

“I wanted to kill my family when I was 13 years old. A year prior to that, I entered the drug dealing mafia world and I wanted to be the most notorious drug dealer in the streets. I remembered my desire to rise up to power among the gangsters and I almost killed my mother to prove my worth. Drug trafficking, theft, fraud, prostitution, you name it, I did it. I went in and out of prison and the courtroom on a weekly basis. Fast forward to the age of 16, I was sent to reformatory school where I finally met God. One year into that, I told God I would serve Him if He’d let me go home early. He did. I forgot about my promise and went back to drugs. I was renowned in Mossel Bay as one of the most fearsome drug dealers. One night, a desire suddenly came into my heart to go to church with my sister. ‘God wouldn’t want a gangster like me’, was the response in my heart when the altar call came. However, I was so overwhelmed by the Spirit that I ran towards the altar, telling God that I surrender all to Him. As soon as I got home, I destroyed all my drugs. Woke up the next morning, I had no desire for them, and I have been drug-free since. My family was restored to me. I left my gang and have been on fire for Jesus for the past 13 years. God’s hope was my reality. No matter how deep in the darkness I got myself into, His hope reached into the murky darkness and took me out of it.”

“I was a victim of substance abuse. It was my solace after my mum died and my dad became an alcoholic when I was 16. Although I lost only my mum, my fatherly figure left me as well. Despite growing up in a Christian home, I cursed God for what He allowed me to go through before turning to drugs and away from Him. They held off the pain for a while until I decided to give God one final chance by accepting an invitation to a church youth camp. ‘I’ll be done with You if You don’t show up’, was what I told God. Following the response of an altar call, I opened up about my problems to the church counsellors. I prayed by myself that night, asking for a confirmation and I was convinced that I received it after. So began my life with and my hunger for Jesus. DTS for me was so foundational, especially on the reality of God’s immeasurable grace in my life. One time during that week, I remembered that a conviction hit me so hard that, instead of going for lunch, I grabbed my Bible, ran into the prayer room, and started weeping and crying out to God, declaring, ‘I am free!’
After my DTS, I came home to my dad, drastically changed and now on fire for Jesus. God answered all the prayers that I have petitioned for him during that six months. We opened up to each other, cried together, and God restored our relationship. I came back for SBS because I want to be transformed into the likeness of Christ through His Word. I hope to encourage the Body of Christ with what I will learn and how I am reflect Jesus in this season of renewing myself in the word of the LORD.”
