“Elie is not my real name. I chose it because ‘Elie’ means Light. I grew up in a Buddhist family, but God was introducing Himself to me through many of my friends. I was invited to church and experienced the love of God through the body of believers, especially at the time where I was drowning in my struggles of life. My parents became angry at me for going to church, eventually wanting to be baptised and following a ‘western religion.’ My church was not too encouraging about the idea of missions so I had no exposure to it. After being an English school teacher in Japan and an air stewardess in Singapore Airlines for two years each, I was invited into the world of YWAM and ended up serving another two years in the DTS department of YWAM Singapore. I came to YWAM Muizenberg for my SBS because I wanted to have a cross-cultural experience and God’s heart for pioneering ministries. My parents did not approve of my life in YWAM or coming to South Africa and I didn’t have the finances to come. However, God came through and provided the means all within one week and, upon seeing that, my parents were assured to let me come. Against all the odds in my life, God was constantly faithful and loving. I guess my name has a prophetic significance; that I can be a light to my family, my church and my friends, that they may see a glimpse of the goodness of God through my life and be drawn towards it.”
